This summer, over 1.3 million students across the UK reached major academic milestones. A total of 313,190 students received A level results, while 1,019,005 received their GCSE results.

In addition, 11,920 students completed the T Level Technical Qualification (TQ), marking a significant step toward vocational and technical careers.( I love the face that TQ is being promoted, and students are being recognised for non-academic subjects!)

Whether students are preparing for further education or considering part-time work, apprenticeships, or full-time roles, it’s important to be aware of emerging industries and growing opportunities.

Fastest Growing Industries to Watch

  1. Information Technology (IT): The IT sector continues to expand rapidly, offering opportunities in software development, cybersecurity, data analysis, and technical support. Students with strong problem-solving skills and an interest in technology can explore internships, coding bootcamps, or entry-level positions in tech support or digital marketing. Basic programming knowledge can go a long way.
  2. Home Furnishings and Interior Retail: The growth of home improvement and interior design, boosted by online platforms and sustainability trends, is creating new jobs in sales, e-commerce, and customer service. Part-time retail roles or social media marketing for home décor brands can provide both income and practical experience.
  3. Sports Clothing and Equipment: The active lifestyle movement is driving demand for sportswear and gear, creating roles in retail, product promotion, and brand ambassadorships. Many sports retailers offer flexible hours suited to students. For those passionate about sports, these roles can also serve as a stepping stone into the health and fitness industry.
  4. Green Manufacturing and Energy: With sustainability at the forefront of global change, careers in green technology and renewable energy are on the rise. Students interested in science, engineering, or environmental studies may consider work experience or apprenticeships in areas like solar energy installation, green construction, or sustainable product design.

So the golden question will AI, take opportunities away school leavers and students? If we cast our minds back,  the rise of the internet created jobs that didn’t exist in the 1990s (social media managers, app developers, cybersecurity experts), AI is already creating new roles, such as:

  • AI ethics specialists
  • Machine learning engineers
  • Prompt designers (people who design how AI systems are asked questions)
  • AI-enhanced healthcare and education roles

In fact, some would argue that many of these jobs are more human-centred, requiring creativity, empathy, critical thinking, and adaptability.

For younger generations, success in an AI-influenced job market will depend less on what job you aim for, and more on what skills you develop. Top future-proof skills include:

  • Digital literacy
  • Adaptability
  • Problem-solving
  • Communication
  • Critical thinking
  • Ethical reasoning
  • Collaboration with AI tools

The winners will be students who are comfortable working alongside AI, using it to enhance their performance, will have a competitive edge.

However, some caution is needed. While AI opens many doors, it could increase inequality if some students are left behind due to lack of:

  • Access to tech and training
  • Awareness of career changes
  • Confidence in adapting to new tools

That’s why schools, communities, and employers must ensure equal access to digital education — and why it’s so important for students to stay curious and proactive about learning.

It’s a Shift, not a Shutdown! AI will likely reduce the number of routine and predictable jobs — but it will create more opportunities for innovative, people-focused, and tech-savvy roles. The students who start developing the right skills now will be well-placed to thrive in the new economy.

Summary

With the job market evolving, AI remaining prominent and new industries growing fast, it’s an exciting time for students to explore their options. Whether it’s gaining part-time work experience, building new skills online, or applying for apprenticeships, every step taken now can help build a strong foundation for the future.
